Supernatural helped me stay clean

I had watched Supernatural when it aired in 2005. Then once I got up to season 4, I stopped because of many things. I didn't return back to it until a few months ago.
A group of us as volunteers were talking about supernatural at Salt Lake Comic Con this past September. They were talking about how season 10 was on Netflix and season 11 would be airing in a few weeks. I told them, "no spoilers. I still gotta catch up."
One of the guys, who's now one of my best friends, asked, "what season are you on?"
I answered with, "5. I stopped a while ago and just couldn't find time to catch up, with graduating university and everything."
He then said, "oh there's a lot! Have you ran into spoilers on Facebook?"
"Yeah but not major ones. But it's okay. I know I'm gonna be caught up soon."
What I didn't realize is that when I started to catch up, I grew close to all the characters again like how I did before. I realized why I loved the show. I officially caught up within 6 weeks.
I've been battling depression since I was a child, but self-harm, and suicidal thoughts a little bit over 2 years. Watching Supernatural, I saw all the predicaments that came across Sam and Dean. And we all know they've gone through so much loss and struggle. But the best part is that they've endured. They made it. They survived. And they keep surviving. They keep fighting.
Watching Supernatural has changed how I see my struggles. Sure, I'm not battling human-possessed demons. But I am battling personal demons within myself everyday. And right now, I'm successful. I'm overcoming them all. I can't wait for a day where I can meet Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins, to thank them for helping me save my life. Supernatural may have its dark moments, but it teaches lessons that I think everyone needs in their lives.
