When I moved to the Czech Republic from Canada way back in the early '90s, I used to organise trips to various parts of the country with as many of my new-found friends who wanted to come. We got to know some new places and enjoy each other's company.
Well one of my Czech friends always brought his guitar on these trips and sang both Czech and English songs and we would sing along to the ones we knew. He knew I liked Leonard Cohen and went to the effort to learn to sing One of Us Cannot Be Wrong.
He began strumming and singing in a very serious voice and was surprised as we started laughing. He kept playing and we kept laughing. Finally he stopped and asked if it was his playing, or his accent, or why we were laughing when he was playing such a serious song. So we went through the lyrics again and it was as if he understood them for the first time! He also started to laugh and found it hard to finish the song!
Ever since then it is a mainstay in his repertoire.
