Mr. Miyazaki,

I’m sure when you first began these creations, you probably didn’t predict that they would become part of the fabric of my childhood and the childhood of many others. Your work is deeply rooted in my memories and to this day it brings me together with others who share these roots. Your films are such powerful expressions of beauty, art, and humanity that you’ve joined countless people across various borders. I have a deep, abiding respect for nature and life, and I found resonance with Princess Mononoke and Nausicaa (two of my favorites). There are so many wonderful things to say about your creations that I don’t know where to begin. I suppose what I wish to express most is my gratitude toward you. The world needs people like you, who boldly dream in color with such artistry, who remind us of the better part of ourselves and others—the part of us that remembers what it feels like to abandon ourselves to joy, revel in our innocence that rises above the dust, and holds compassion in both hands like a burning torch. Thank you for taking this journey with us. I will carry what you've given me and where I run with it, I run not alone.

All my best,
Crystal Tao
