Dear Master of Magic,

Dear Master of Magic,

I think I understand now, why you have created what you have. The little universes, the twist-turning plotlines, the individual souls you breathe fiery life into. I think I get why you would spend your life on this silent endeavor to portray the human condition in all its pitfalls and brilliances.
Each time I watch one of your creations, I am discovering something new—perhaps about myself, perhaps about the characters. There is no ‘first time’ I’ve watched Chihiro and Haku grow together in Spirited Away. Despite knowing the lines and songs by heart, every time I am enraptured by the movie, I am experiencing it for the first time again.
In my life, there are glimpses of your gold-spun stories, immortalized and wondrous, gold not because they are perfect, but because they are lovely and loved. (Isn’t that the human condition?) I hope you know your whimsical dreams have made their way across the world to me. I hope you know they have shaken me and moved my soul, and through all your magic, I will never be the same.
You are the brightest flame and the most compelling character in your stories. In their words, you tell the story of your life and your love. For that, I thank you, and I know that even though you have retired, your stories will never stop bringing magic into this world.

Yours,
Sean Tseng
