From A Young Writer and Artist

Dear Mr. Miyazaki,

“What I should I write about?” I thought about this for a long time. I never thought I would have the chance to write something like this.

I didn’t know who you were and what Studio Ghibli was until I entered university about 5 years ago. The only Miyazaki movie I had seen was Kiki’s Delivery Service when I was child. I didn’t remember much about it but I enjoyed watching it.

When I became a university student and I told my friends I hadn’t seen your movies, we later watched Howl’s Moving Castle and Spirited Away for my birthday. I was completely enchanted. Where do I even begin to describe how I felt?

There’s so many things I loved about those two movies. However, the first thing I noticed first in Howl’s Moving Castle was the detail of the scenery and backgrounds. As a person who likes details I thought Howl’s castle and the movie’s landscape were very beautiful.

The next thing I loved about your movies was the characters. Usually when I read a book or watch a movie, I analyze the characters. I love the characters in your films because they’re complex and seem like real human beings. Even characters like Calcifer and Haku (who was actually a river god) were well written. There isn’t a character who is only a hero or only a villain. Everyone is complex. No-face is a good example. At first he scared me, especially when he changed. However, I learned that it was human greed that changed him, not because he was evil to begin with.

As a writer and artist myself (writing and drawing are my hobbies) I am inspired by your works and hope to one day create something that other people can enjoy and be inspired by.

To be honest,I haven’t yet seen all of your movies. Besides the movies I’ve already mentioned, I have seen Castle in the Sky and Princess Mononoke. Those were also excellent movies. I want to see the rest of the movies you have directed and other Studio Ghibli movies as well.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Perla Camacho
