A Father's Source of Joy

Dear Mr. Miyazaki,

When I was eighteen, I left my parents' home, packed my things, and went out of state for university. As a parting gift, my father, the quiet, gentle man who loves me most in this world gave to me a Totoro. He said this creature's wide eyed readiness to take on what is and may be reminded him of me. Even though in this gift I didn't so much see myself, I did see how he saw me to be - magical, imaginative, innocent yet wise.

It is thus that Totoro has followed me into adulthood twelve years later. He has become my PĂșca in the corner of my eye, my secret soft-bellied smile, my talisman for an ancient form of innocence.

Your artistry and your creativity, Mr. Miyazaki, is a grounding beacon for me in a life whose horizon line might otherwise be tethered to a less adaptable form of joy. It allowed a man of little words to express to his daughter clearly and simply that come what may, there are forces within her at play that allow her to be a wide eyed and ready source of joy for him. You have given us a gift.

With all my appreciation and respect,
